What exactly was the Bauhaus?

In 1919, the State Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius as a school of arts in Weimar, Eastern Germany. The Bauhaus revolutionized creative and artistic thinking worldwide and reunited fine art and functional design, to create practical objects with the soul of artworks. Architecture, interior design, textiles and woodwork were placed on a par with fine arts such as sculpture and painting. The artists with a vocation for Bauhaus were called "Master of Form". The distinguished teachers who worked here included Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Oskar Schlemmer. The Bauhaus approach to teaching, and to the relationship between art, society, and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and in the United States in terms of the development of modern art and modern thought. Today, the historical Bauhaus is the most influential educational establishment in the fields of architecture, art and design and essentially characterizes the image of German design abroad.

Elements of the Bauhaus have worked their way easily into our lives: from the Ikea flat-pack furniture in our living rooms to the Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit of David Bowie.

How to dress?

Geometric shapes, sharp lines and pops of colours - Bauhaus is still current and has also been adopted by the fashion world. Some of the most influential fashion designers of the 1960s were inspired by the clear structure and the reduction of the Bauhaus style, amongst them André Courrèges, Mary Quant and Jil Sander.
