If you want to open a bank account in a German financial institution, you are required to provide the appropriate identification and verification of legitimacy. According to the German Money Laundering Act (Geldwäschegesetz (GwG)), every natural person or legal entity wishing to open a German bank account (e.g. current account, deposit, and safe deposit box) needs to undergo verification of identity. In conformity with the German Tax Code (Abgabenordnung (AO)), a verification of legitimacy is also required.

According to an agreement between the German Banking Industry and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) ), we are glad to be able to offer this service in China.

Our Service for You:

  • GwG-Identification and legitimacy verification of natural persons or authorized representatives of legal entities within one working day
  • Transmission of records and forwarding of copies of the necessary documents (Passport, ID) to the relevant banking institution in Germany

Important Reminder:

  • Due to the specific requirements of each banking institution, it is necessary to arrange an appointment in advance.
  • Costs for the GwG-Identification and legitimacy verification are usually covered by the German banking institution. Please contact the bank of your choosing in advance to clarify the exact terms.

Our customer:

„Recently I had to deal with a banking matter in Germany and I needed a verification of my identity and permanent address in Shanghai. The AHK team provided a very efficient service and issued the necessary documents in no time.

As a German citizen living in a foreign country this type of issue can be very complicated and bothersome and it is good to know that the AHK is here to support us!“
