Q: Today, we're diving into the complexities of internship programs for German nationals in China. To start, can you share why German companies in China would like to hire interns?

A: The Chinese market is very dynamic – therefore gaining on-the-ground understanding becomes more and more crucial. Furthermore, increasing China competence among their workforce is essential for long-term success.

Q: That makes a lot of sense. How does AHK facilitate this process for German companies looking to place interns in China?

A: There is a "China-Germany Youth Internship Exchange Program", which is an agreement signed by the governments of China and Germany, facilitating young people from both countries to complete internships in each other's country. AHK Greater China is the official designated German implementing party of this exchange program. We issue internship confirmation letters to German students who meet the requirements of the program and are responsible for promoting the implementation of the program in China. Our goal is to assist as many German students as possible in completing their internships in China. Therefore, we also provide a full range of work permit and residence permit application services. This helps German companies in China to hire German interns in full compliance with regulations and avoid legal risks.

Q: Who can participate in the internship program?

A: The internship program is primarily designed for German nationals aged 18 to 35.This includes current German students enrolled in German universities or vocational schools who have completed at least four semesters of study, as well as recent graduates who have finished their studies within the last 12 months. The internship can last a maximum of six months, and there should be a correlation between study and internship.

Q: What initiatives does AHK have in place to prepare these interns for their roles in China?

A: We offer pre-departure cross-cultural training to ensure that interns are well-equipped for their internship in China. This training covers workplace cultures, communication styles, and local business practices, which are crucial for their success and integration into the company. After landing in China, the program includes a half-day city orientation in a group format, one week of online caring support, and the option for additional local support based on needs. We have also established a WeChat group for German interns, where we post important information and answer students' questions to help them adapt to life in China.

Q: That's great to hear! In your experience, what are some common challenges that companies face when integrating interns into their teams in China?

A: One major challenge is the adjustment to different work styles and expectations. Interns may initially struggle with the pace of work or cultural nuances that influence business interactions.

Q: Finally, what is your advice for companies considering bringing interns from Germany to China?

A: My advice is to be informed about the legal requirements for hiring German nationals as interns in China. We can support companies in handling this complex compliance work so that they can concentrate on creating a supportive environment for their interns.

Q It sounds like with the right approach and support, internships can be a great experience for both companies and interns in China.

A: I look forward to seeing more companies leverage these opportunities in the future.
