TAICANG OVERVIEW
Covering a total area of 810 km2 and boasting a population of 1.03 million, the city is home to a national development zone, a national comprehensive bonded zone, a national first-class port, a national logistics and shipping hub, and a provincial high-tech zone. In 2025, Taicang Port achieved a container throughput of 8.73 million TEUs, maintaining its global ranking of 20th. That same year, Taicang’s GDP reached CNY 197.7 billion, with its import and export volume standing at CNY 82.7 billion.
LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION
Taicang stands as the closest county-level city to downtown Shanghai, boasting convenient and efficient transportation networks. The city has developed a “5+1” rail transit system, which has significantly strengthened its connectivity with Shanghai and the broader Yangtze River Delta region. Currently, more than 60 train services run between Taicang and Shanghai on a daily basis, with a travel time of approximately 20 minutes. Furthermore, the upcoming Minhang-Jiading-Taicang Intercity Railway will further boost connectivity, enabling seamless transfers to over 10 metro lines in Shanghai, thus facilitating smoother travel and business exchanges.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AND INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM
Taicang boasts a business-friendly environment with a clear and optimized industrial system, adhering to the “3+3+X” industrial structure. The city takes three 100-billion-yuan pillar industries as the core, namely high-end equipment manufacturing, advanced materials, and headquarters logistics & trade. Meanwhile, it prioritizes three characteristic industries—aerospace, biomedicine, and cultural tourism—to foster new growth drivers. In addition, Taicang is actively laying out two future-oriented industries, embodied intelligence and artificial intelligence, further expanding industrial boundaries and enhancing long-term development vitality.
INDUSTRIAL CHAIN SUPPORTING & UP-/DOWNSTREAM COLLABORATION SERVICES
Taicang has formed a highly complete industrial chain supporting system, with a mature upstream and downstream matching network for its core industries. A striking example is the automotive component sector: 70% of parts for a car can be sourced locally, and one out of every two newly produced cars worldwide is fitted with auto parts made in Taicang. Backed by such industrial agglomeration advantages, the local government facilitates upstream and downstream industrial collaboration, proactively connects upstream and downstream enterprises for supply and marketing matching and technical exchanges, and provides targeted support including resource coordination for key supporting projects and efficient resolution of industrial chain bottlenecks.
SINO-GERMAN COOPERATION
In 1993, the first German-funded enterprise KERN-LIEBERS came to Taicang, which started Taicang’s in-depth cooperation with Germany. Today, Taicang has gathered more than 560 German enterprises, becoming one of the regions with the most intensive investment and highest development level of German enterprises in China. Accounting for one-tenth of the country's total Sino-German cooperation projects, it has attracted a cumulative German investment of over USD 6 billion and achieved an annual industrial output value of more than CNY 67 billion. Most German enterprises in Taicang are in the precision manufacturing industry and many of them have completed several rounds of capital increase and production expansion. More and more German enterprises have established R&D centers and regional headquarters in Taicang.
GOVERNMENT SERVICES
With 33 years of experience working with German enterprises, Taicang offers full-time comprehensive consulting services in foreign languages for projects. A dedicated project coordination team has been established to assist with investment approval, environmental protection assessment, energy conservation evaluation, and other related procedures, while coordinating with government departments and local resources to promptly address any challenges encountered by enterprises.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Taicang has a strong high-quality talent pool. In vocational education, it has introduced the German dual education system since 2001, nurturing over 10,000 managerial and technical talents to date, with China’s first AHK Academy, a landmark for Sino-German vocational education cooperation, and Chien-Shiung Institute of Technology, which has launched order-based classes with local German enterprises, with its popular majors enabling graduates to secure corresponding jobs directly upon graduation. In higher education, the renowned Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University Taicang Campus steadily provides high-end talents for local enterprises including German-invested ones.
