Climate Markets Cooperation

Since 2008, AHK Greater China Beijing has been implementing several projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) in order to actively engage German enterprises in the field of emissions reduction in China. Within this framework, a large number of activities, including a series of network events, business trips, and information meetings were organized to establish a platform for German and Chinese companies, authorities, and organizations, which supports an effective and sustainable cooperation.

Besides launching a national emissions trading system in 2017, the Chinese government is pursuing further measures that revive the global debate on market-based mechanisms and climate protection instruments, such as the planned trading of emissions certificates in the aviation sector, a credit system concept for New Energy Vehicles, and the new Environmental Protection Tax Law. In addition, the more stringent targets of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) further emphasize aspects such as renewable energy production and CO2 emissions reduction measures in the industrial and transport sectors in China, opening up new business opportunities for German companies.

Through the current “Climate Markets Cooperation” project, running from January 2017 to December 2018, both, the involvement of German stakeholders regarding climate protection in China and the Chinese understanding and competence in this area are highlighted. With organizing regular networking meetings and publishing of the “Econet Monitor” Magazine, the project follows a long-term strategy. It builds on AHK Greater China Beijing’s large network of German and Chinese stakeholders and decision-makers in the field of climate protection, that has been established during the past years, in order to further promote the climate protection efforts of China and actively involves German companies in this process.
